Style Spotlight: Spring Edition

By: Sophia Nunn

After moving to Bellingham and attending Western Washington University since last Spring, the wide diversity of campus fashion was a feature of this college that always captured my attention. At the beginning of last December, I proposed an idea to capture fashion on campus through the lens of my camera and encase small moments of expression into an ongoing project. Through meetings and the exchange of ideas over the course of Winter quarter, a game plan and execution was officially set up. Finally in March, I saw everything we had spoken about come to life.

The night before setting up in the Red Square, I had my doubts of how this project would be received; would people be interested enough to come up to our table? What if we only get a few photographs? Once the next day came, my coworker and I patiently sat at our table, like two kids trying to sell cups of lemonade, and the concerns I had soon drained away.

As the passing period started, curious students, individually or in small groups, would come up and question what we were doing. Quickly enough, those people were ready to get their photo taken once they found out. There was nothing but joy when seeing the excitement in students’ faces, as they were able to show off a unique physical representation of themselves. There was a big element of vulnerability I saw throughout this project, making the experience truly special to me.

Without the help of the AS Review team, the incredible graphic designers and staff of WWU, none of this would have been possible. Thank you to those who helped with and supported this project.
