Genaro Meza-Roa, the Associated Students vice president for business and operations, has lost a recall vote and will be removed from his position immediately.

The recall was approved by 92.26 percent of the 1,449 students who voted in the election.

In voting to initiate the recall election, the AS board cited a number of examples of what they saw as Meza-Roa not completing his job duties, including testimony from five employees he oversaw.

The AS student senate also passed a resolution recommending Meza-Roa’s recall after hearing testimony from other board members about his job conduct and reviewing an AS Review article about conflict between him and other board members. They also received an email from a former student who said they had disturbing experiences involving Meza-Roa.

That former student spoke to the AS Review to describe a pattern of harassment by Meza-Roa that led her to receive an interim no-contact directive from the university.

Now, the AS will hold a special election to fill the position. Potential candidates can pick up packets in the AS board office and must submit 50 signatures by Friday, Alec Willis, AS elections coordinator, said. The next special election will be held two weeks after that.

Corrected 2/4/19: 92.26 percent voted to recall, not 92.6 percent.
